The power was turned OFF on a server (NEC Express5800) being used as an SQL server before a long vacation.
The server was to be used by employees during the vacation, and the power was turned ON, however, the boot-up process stopped at the BIOS, and the OS (Windows 2000 Server) did not start up.
The system administrator rushed into work and tried to recover the fault, however, the server still did not boot up.
No back-up had been taken. The data existed only on the server, leaving us with a problem.
It was an old server with RAID configuration that had been running for years, and we had no idea how it was set up. The previous system administrator, who had set up the server, left the company a year ago, leaving us up against a brick wall.
The server was full of important data such as customer information, and inventory and transaction related information. We won't be able to get back to work after the vacation, and therefore need to urgently recover the server.

Details of Diagnosis The extent of physical fault was checked on all three HDDs. A clone of all 3 HDDs was made in order to safely retrieve data. The RAID was reconfigured from the cloned HDDs using our own equipment.
Partition information was verified, and we were also able to access data areas. An intact folder configuration was also verified.

Recovery Percentage

As a result of the above mentioned recovery process, over 99% of data was successfully recovered from the Express5800.

Technical staff handling, comments

Apparently, the customer contacted another data recovery company before placing a request with Riplus. No one was able to come out due to the long vacation, however, and so the problem was brought to us.
We were under pressure to resolve the issue due to the implications on the entire company when resuming work after the vacation, however, given the tight deadline, we were able to deal with the fault and resolve the problem within a few hours. As a result of our diagnosis, the customer now understands the previously confusing RAID configuration.
The customer was in a panic when they brought this problem to us, but were relieved that they would be able to relax and see in the New Year when told that we would be able to retrieve their data.
